The plain-English case for Astro vs WordPress: page speed, security, maintenance, custom design, and content portability, plus the honest caveats we won't skip.
Every week we talk to a business owner whose WordPress site is slow, hacked, or broken after an update. Astro vs WordPress isn’t a close call for us anymore. PageLyft builds every client site on Astro, and this is the plain-English version of why.
Pages load fast
Astro sites are built ahead of time. When someone visits your site, the page is already assembled and ready, so it appears almost instantly.
A typical WordPress page is assembled on the spot, every visit, by the theme and whatever plugins are installed. Each plugin adds its own code to the page. Sites that have been through a few redesigns and a few dozen plugins routinely take 3 or more seconds to show anything, and visitors leave in that window.
Speed is also a ranking signal. Google measures how fast your pages load for real users, and it factors into where you show up in search.
Nothing to hack
A WordPress site has a login page at a URL everyone knows (yoursite.com/wp-admin) and a database behind it. Most break-ins don’t even target WordPress itself; they come through outdated plugins. Security vendors consistently report WordPress as the most-hacked platform on the web, and plugins as the main way in.
An Astro site has neither of those things on your domain. There’s no admin login to guess and no plugin directory to probe. Your content lives in Sanity, a separate service with its own security team, not on your web server.
Less maintenance
Owning a WordPress site means owning a software stack: core updates, theme updates, plugin updates, PHP versions. Skip them and you’re exposed. Run them and one plugin conflict can take the site down on a Tuesday morning. That’s why “maintenance plans” exist at all.
An Astro site has nothing running on the server to patch. There is no update button, so there is no update that breaks the site. The maintenance work that actually grows your business, like new content, SEO, and conversion improvements, is where the ongoing effort goes instead.
Custom design, not a theme
Most WordPress sites start from a purchased theme, which means your site starts as someone else’s design with your logo swapped in. Thousands of sites share it.
We design and build each Astro site for one brand. The layout, type, and components exist because your business needs them, not because a theme shipped them. That’s also why our clients’ sites don’t look like anyone else’s.
Your content stays yours
Here’s the trap nobody mentions when you build on a page builder: your pages get written in that builder’s format. Switch themes or builders later and the content doesn’t carry over cleanly. Pages need rebuilding.
With Sanity CMS, your content is stored as structured data, completely separate from the design. You edit text and photos in a clean editor made for your site. When you redesign in five years, the content moves with you untouched.
The honest caveats
A well-maintained, lightly-built WordPress site with a good host can be fast and secure. Some of the problems above are really page-builder and plugin-stack problems that careful teams avoid. But that care is exactly the ongoing cost: the audits, the update testing, the plugin discipline. Astro removes the work instead of managing it.
WordPress also makes sense if you need its ecosystem, like a community site running on specific plugins. For a marketing site whose job is to load fast, rank, and convert, we haven’t found a case where it wins.
What this looks like for your business
Our builds start around $10,000, launch in as little as one to two weeks, and include Sanity CMS so your team edits content without calling a developer.
If your current site takes seconds to load or you’re paying monthly just to keep it patched, book a call. We’ll look at your site together, show you what’s slowing it down, and give you a straight answer on whether a rebuild is worth it.
